Stop Majoring in the Minors: A Better Way to Think About Supplements
Inside my conversation with Momentous CEO Jeff Byers on why a few high-quality essentials beat a shelf full of hype.
At Longevity Today, we typically dive deep into the latest longevity science - exploring studies, breaking down research and distilling it into practical takeaways. Today, we’re breaking from that format to bring you something equally valuable: an in-depth conversation with a brand you can trust when it comes to the supplements we discuss here.
Why now? Because the supplement industry has a massive credibility problem. Too many products don’t actually contain the ingredients listed on the bottle and even fewer are backed by legitimate science.
In a future issue, I’ll be speaking with a leading researcher whose work has exposed just how common this problem is. But before we get to that, I wanted to spotlight a company that’s doing it right - Momentous.
Cutting Through the Noise
The supplement aisle has never been more crowded or more confusing. New powders, pills and potions appear daily, each armed with bold promises and sleek branding. But too often, what’s inside the bottle doesn’t match the label, and the “science” backing it up is more marketing fiction than fact.
Jeff Byers, former NFL lineman and now CEO of Momentous, is flipping the script. His mission:
Put only the highest-quality, rigorously tested ingredients into each product.
Ensure that what’s on the label is actually in the bottle.
Cut through the wellness noise by offering only products grounded in real science.
It’s an approach rooted in clarity and discipline. No hype-driven launches, no sprawling product catalogs designed to overwhelm. Just the essentials, built with guidance from trusted experts like Dr. Andrew Huberman, Dr. Stacy Sims, and Dr. Kelly Starrett.
Jeff isn’t just building a supplement company, he’s building a trust brand.
At Workup, we share that ethos, surfacing only the highest-quality wellness brands so consumers can make confident, informed choices. That’s why I was genuinely thrilled to sit down with Jeff: here’s a leader holding himself and his company to the highest standards in a space that desperately needs it.
Below is our conversation, edited for clarity and length.

Interview with Jeff Byers, CEO of Momentous
Ryan Frankel (RF): Before founding Momentous, you played in the NFL and captained the USC football team. How did that path lead to the supplement world?
Jeff Byers (JB): After retiring, I co-founded Amp Human, a biotech-born performance company that partnered with elite military and pro sports organizations. We weren’t even trying to build a supplement brand. I never wanted to be a supplement company founder - that was not my goal, not my vision, not my dream. The industry felt so noisy, so untrustworthy.
But in 2020, COVID forced us to rethink. I realized that while supplements were everywhere, quality supplements backed by science and integrity were rare. We leaned in and eventually merged with Momentous, a brand built on the foundation of quality, NSF certification, and elite athletic partnerships.
RF: You’ve called Momentous an “anti-supplement supplement company.” What do you mean by that?
JB: Supplements don’t fix everything. Less is more. Let’s focus on the foundations - we call this the “Momentous Three”: protein, omega-3s and creatine.
If people just focused on these three consistently, they’d be in a much better place. They’re foundational. They’re not sexy. But they work. These compounds are backed by thousands of studies and decades of clinical use. And yet most people still chase the latest mushroom elixir or unproven peptide before getting the basics right.
Our focus on proven supplements is radically different in our industry. Most supplement companies chase what’s trendy. We do the opposite. We lead with simplicity, science and standards, which is why we’ve earned trust across the NFL, the Department of Defense and among world-class researchers and clinicians.
RF: When people ask you what they should take, how do you answer?
JB: I used to just tell people what I took, but that’s misleading. I played in the NFL. I’ve had injuries, brain trauma, orthopedic issues - my needs aren’t the same as yours. Instead, our team worked with top-tier dietitians, performance coaches and researchers to build a hierarchy of need across our portfolio. At the top sit the Momentous Three. Below that are condition-specific products for sleep, cognitive function and training support, always rooted in what the data supports.
RF: Cutting through the noise in wellness isn’t easy. How do you stand out?
JB: Everyone claims quality. Everyone says they’re used by pro athletes. But most of its smoke and mirrors. We sell into every NFL team. That’s different from just sending them a free tub. We also work with credible voices like Dr. Jeremy London, Dr. Stacy Sims and Dr. Andrew Huberman - people who vet us deeply before associating their names. Their trust in Momentous is one of our strongest assets.
RF: You’ve said, “Doing the right thing hurts.” What do you mean?
JB: Doing the right thing hurts, but it won’t kill you. And if you do it long enough, it builds something that lasts. We’ve passed on countless opportunities to cut corners, launch trend-driven products, or lower our standards. But you build a resilient business by making hard decisions. And when your team sees you making those decisions, they start making better ones too.
RF: I co-founded Workup due to my own inability to find truth and transparency in the crowded and noisy health and wellness ecosystem. Our missions feel very aligned.
JB: If we can inspire people to make better decisions, to understand their health and to trust that some companies really do care, we win. And more importantly, they win.
Final Thoughts
Interviewing Jeff reminded me that true leadership in wellness isn’t about noise, it’s about signal. It’s about showing up, doing the work and holding the bar higher than the industry asks you to.
In my recent post, Stop Majoring in the Minors, I talked about the importance of focusing on the few things that actually move the needle instead of scattering attention and resources on the trivial many.
This conversation with Jeff is that philosophy in action.
Momentous centers on a handful of high-quality, rigorously tested products that have strong science behind them, rather than flooding the market with a buffet of unproven pills and powders.
Because here’s the truth: when it comes to supplements, more isn’t better. Better is better. And in a world where so many companies hide behind marketing spin and questionable formulations, choosing a few essentials you can trust will always beat chasing the latest hype.
As Jeff put it: “Momentous will outlive me. It’s my job to make sure it stands for something real.”
That’s the kind of purpose and discipline we should all demand from the brands we let into our lives.
